With the crater floor the trail follows the west rim for just one mile for the Holua cabin for a complete of four miles. The vegetation in Koolau Gap and in the vicinity of Holua cabin is extremely sparse because it grows on tough lava. The cabin is situated at an elevation of 7,000 feet.
